The current average life-expectancy in Myanmar is only 65 years old, a much lower number than many neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. Mung Myat Aung (Ah Mung) attributes this low life expectancy to the lack of healthy food options for low-income people in the Yangon area. He hopes to challenge Burmese people to eat healthier meals in order to promote healthy decision making and ultimately create a more health-conscious society in Myanmar. Ah Mung believes that his passion for advocating nutrition can help Burmese people understand the risks of consuming unhealthy food, including higher risk of heart attack and stroke. In order to communicate nutritional information to the Burmese pubic, Ah Mung created the MyRecipe app to promote healthy lifestyles through an easily accessible platform.

Five-Year Project Goals:

  • Ensure that low-income families in Myanmar have access to the MyRecipe App in order to create a healthier society
  • Collaborate with existing government programs and privately owned businesses to increase nutrition awareness, especially for low-income families

Organization Information: Real Food Challenge

Real Food Challenge aims to break the cycle of unhealthy eating, especially in low-income families in Myanmar. By introducing their MyRecipe app, Real Food Challenge provides daily healthy food choices and basic nutrition knowledge on an easily accessible and user friendly platform. The MyRecipe app provides suggestions of healthy food vendors and local farmers markets in order to encourage Burmese people to eat fresher, seasonal foods rather than relying on unhealthy options. The app also provides price comparisons to help low-income families find the most affordable healthy foods in their area, while also providing healthy recipes to help users prepare new, healthier meals.
