Term: | Fall 2015 |
Project Title: | Perttu Organizers |
UConn GTDI Project Award: | Application Accepted & Funding Awarded |
Albert witnessed the devastation and destruction of Typhoon Sendong in late 2011, but instead of nervously waiting for the region’s next super typhoon, he decided to create a project to help victims of natural disasters restart their lives. There is a high demand for tailors in Cagayan de Oro City, but many of these workers are mothers who are typhoon survivors. Currently, these people only work when an individual places an order, but utilizing this system does not allow for a constant workflow for these women. Albert used grant funding to purchase sewing machines and refurbish old sewing machines so that he can provide tailors with the tools they need to work.
Five-Year Project Goals:
- Create products of export quality
- Pay tailors a living wage
Organization Information: Perttu Organizers
Not only does Perttu Organizers work to help tailors find a steady flow of work, but the organization also sponsors financial literacy seminars. Empowering mothers to provide for their families is important and empowering them with financial literacy training would result in a positive and substantial social impact.
